Q&A: Everything You Want To Know About QLVR's Laceless Running Shoes

Your questions answered by QLVR co-founder Nicolle Dean

When you create something that's never existed before, people have questions. Good questions, actually. The kind that deserve real answers, not marketing spin.

Since launching QLVR—the world's first laceless Running Slipper designed exclusively for women—we've answered hundreds of questions at events, in DMs, and over email. We've noticed the same handful come up again and again.

So here they are: the honest answers to what people are most curious about when they discover QLVR.

Q1: How Do They Actually Stay On Without Laces?

Nicolle: This is always the first question, and understandably so! Our Wing Fit system isn't like other slip-ons that just use stretchy fabric. It's a patented technology engineered to expand as your foot enters, then contract around your midfoot and heel to create a 360-degree lock.

Think of it like a bird's wing—it opens to let you in, then closes to hold you securely. The zigzag design follows the natural contours of your foot, providing superior stability and support.

Made from Pebax® (a bio-based polymer derived from castor beans) the Wing Fit system is as sustainable as it is innovative. Once you're in, you're locked. No adjusting. No retying. Just slip on and go.

In just one second, you get the secure fit of traditional laced shoes with the convenience of slip-ons. No compromise.

Q2: Can I Really Run In These, Or Are They Just For The Gym?

Nicolle: You can absolutely run in them. Our customers take QLVR on everything from park runs to 10Ks to trail runs to half marathons. The secure fit means no heel slippage even during long runs, and the deep flex grooves support explosive movements during sprints.

That said, they're designed as versatile training shoes—so they work brilliantly for running AND HIIT AND strength work AND daily life : one shoe for your entire routine.

You're not sacrificing performance for convenience. You're getting both.

Key features that make QLVR work for serious training:

  • Rocker sole for efficient run mechanics

  • Deep forefoot flex grooves for dynamic movement

  • Dandelion-derived cushioning for responsive energy return

  • Pebax® propulsion plate for springboard effect

  • Secure 360° fit that eliminates heel slippage

  • Stable midfoot for lifting and resistance work

Q3: What Makes QLVR Different From Other Slip-On or Laceless Shoes?

Nicolle: Two fundamental things.

First, performance vs. convenience. Most "hands-free" or slip-on shoes on the market prioritise convenience over performance—they're loose by design because that makes them easy to get on and off. QLVR delivers both: genuine athletic performance with one-second convenience. The Wing Fit system provides a locked-in fit that rivals (and often exceeds) traditional laced shoes.

Second, women-first from day one. From the very beginning, we set out to design exclusively for women's biomechanics. Not adapt men's shoes. Not scale down. Start from scratch with women at the centre.

That means:

  • Higher arch support (women typically have higher arches than men)

  • Narrower heel cup (for genuine lockdown, not slippage)

  • Wider toe box (to accommodate natural toe splay)

For decades, the sports industry has treated women as an afterthought—designing for men first, then shrinking and pinking for women. We decided to flip that entirely. Women first. Always.

The difference is something you feel immediately when you try them on. That's why nine out of ten women who try QLVR buy them on the spot.

Q4: Do They Actually Fit Women Differently, Or Is That Just Marketing?

Nicolle: It's real. And it's the entire reason QLVR exists.

Here's the truth about the footwear industry: most athletic shoes are designed to fit men's feet first, then scaled down to accommodate women's sizes. Why? It's cheaper. Brands can share expensive components like lasts (the foot-shaped molds shoes are built around) and cutting dies across both genders, keeping production costs down.

But women's feet aren't just smaller versions of men's feet. The shape, biomechanics, and pressure points are genuinely different:

  • Higher arches on average

  • Narrower heels relative to forefoot width

  • Wider toe boxes needed for natural toe splay

  • Different pressure distribution patterns

  • Different gait mechanics

We started QLVR to prioritise the 50% of the population that's been ignored for decades. Women first wasn't a decision we made halfway through the design process to save money or compromise fit. It was the founding principle. The entire point.

Does it cost more to design exclusively for women? Yes. We invest in women-specific lasts, engineering, and testing from the ground up.

But that's not a bug—it's the feature. We're not here to do what's cheapest. We're here to put women first. Always.

The result? 90% of  women who try QLVR buy them immediately, because they can finally feel what it's like when shoes are actually designed for their feet.

Q5: How Come QLVR Running Slippers Are So Bouncy?

Nicolle: That's one of the first things people notice when they try QLVR on—the instant bounce underfoot. It's the result of carefully engineered layers working together beneath your feet.

We've built what we call a "propulsion system", multiple performance technologies stacked and integrated to deliver responsive energy return with every step.

Here's what's happening under your foot (I’m about to get a bit nerdy here):

The Pebax® Propulsion Plate
Sandwiched between our twin cushioning layers sits a full-length plate made from Pebax®: the same bio-based polymer (derived from castor beans) we use in our Wing Fit system. This plate acts as a literal springboard, storing and releasing energy with each footstrike. It's what gives you that forward propulsion during runs and explosive power during jumps.

Double-Layered Dandelite™ Cushioning
We don't use just one midsole—we use two. Our dual-density cushioning system (made from dandelion-derived foam) provides:

  • Upper layer: Cups the back of your foot for stability while offering high rebound under the ball of your foot

  • Lower layer: Features a rocker silhouette for efficient run mechanics, plus wavy "piston" grooves in the midfoot that compress and spring back to keep your foot stable during lateral movements

Removable Performance Insole
The final layer is a cushioned insole that adds comfort for all-day wear. Remove it, and you unlock even more ground feel and responsiveness for high-intensity training.

The result?
Lightweight, responsive cushioning that doesn't sacrifice stability. You get that "bouncy" feeling for running and cardio, but the shoe stays grounded and supportive for lifting and resistance work.

The short version: it's not just foam. It's engineered propulsion.
